Carlotta Noseband
"a bit softer"
Carlotta was a beautiful, unregistered Arabian mare belonging to Natural Horsemanship trainer, Christa Miremadi of Horsemanship from the Heart™. Christa and Carlotta had been together since they were both very young. Carlotta had spent her early years as a camp horse at a kids' guest ranch and had experienced many rough rides in a strong curb bit. The inexperienced hands of the young children finding their balance on her mouth had taken its toll on her by the time she and Christa found each other in 1993. By this time, Carlotta had developed a "bad (and dangerous) habit" of tossing her head violently, bolting, bucking and sometimes worse, whenever pressure was applied to her bridle. After many different training aids such as martingales, draw reins, tie downs and side reins were employed in an attempt to "train" these behaviors out of her, it was discovered that Carlotta's TMJ (jaw joint) was displaced and causing her great pain. It was the pain that was causing her uncontrollable behavior and not a problem with her training at all. Riding in a traditional bridle and bit would be painful. This was a chronic disorder brought on by the inappropriate use of her curb bit. As a result of this discovery, Carlotta was given the chance to remain bitless. Once bitless, Carlotta was safe and responsive and far more comfortable. It was her story and Christa's desires to eliminate her discomfort that inspired the search for a more comfortable and more effective bitless system - one that worked off of communication and not through pain. It was Carlotta who inspired the Carlotta Noseband.
